Interacting ecosystem processes are of different types and take place at different time and space scales. Therefore, ExpeER integrates complementary types of infrastructures in the field of ecosystem research in order to allow investigation of these different processes.

All the infrastructures involved in the project ExpeER are highly instrumented. They are research sites or facilities with sufficient instrumentation and sampling to allow manipulation (in the case of Ecotrons and experimental sites), or monitoring, (in the case of observational sites) of environmental and ecological parameters. They aim to generate comprehensive data sets for model development, validation and mechanistic hypothesis testing.
